Preschool at Home, Day Five - Caterpillars & Butterflies
We learned about Caterpillars and Butterflies on Day Five of PAH. It was a great choice for our last day about bugs. There are so many great resources out there for preschoolers that it was difficult to choose which activities to do!
Reading - The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
Learning the Days of the Week - A concept from The Very Hungry Caterpillar; used these printables and practiced writing them after Jack learned them in the proper order.
Craft - Make a very cool chain caterpillar using these instructions. I pre-cut the pieces and let Jack use the glue stick to put them together.
Learning - We learned about the life sequence of an egg to caterpillar (or larva) to pupa (or chrysalis) to butterfly. I used these cards to re-enforce the concept. Jack was able to tell me each sequence and put them in the proper order.
Computer Time - Jack loved doing this interactive butterfly coloring activity on the computer. He would erase it once he finished and do it all over again with new colors.
Color by Number - Coloring by number is a great way to re-enforce patterns and matching, as well as number recognition. Jack had not done this before, and I was surprised when he read off the colors written next to the number. You can find this printable here.
Nature Walk - Take a walk outside and look for butterflies in your back yard. The peak time is May to August. We were not able to find any, but enjoyed the time outside anyways.
Facts - Some new things we learned at PAH (mom included!) are that butterflies see colors better than any other animal, butterflies migrate further than any other animal, and the only difference between butterflies and moths is that butterflies fly during the day and moths fly at night.
